Oh My Goodness

The eclectic pop duo Oh My Goodness, aka Therese Workman and Tyler Wood, emerged from a three-year “cave” earlier this year to release their fantastically diverse debut self-titled EP. Today now marks the release of their remix album, which features a whole host of talented musicians and composers, reformulating and reimagining Oh My Goodness’ songs. I had a chance to chat with Therese and Tyler about how Oh My Goodness came together and the music that they’ve made thus far.

It was a match made at the toilet. While at Harvard, Therese and Tyler both had the dorm job of cleaning bathrooms and were assigned to the same row. Tyler recalls, “Therese was whistling some song as she was cleaning the toilet and I noticed the melody of the song and I liked it and she remembers me asking her what it was and it was actually something she had written.” Therese was flattered, “I had known about his musicianship so it was a very big compliment.”

Years later, Therese contacted Tyler on Myspace and that’s when he first heard her song “OMG OMG.” “I was totally blown away by it,” Tyler remembers. “I was totally floored by her fearlessness with lyrics and her fearlessness with harmonies. Everything about it was fearless for me. That’s something I was missing in the projects I was working on. Music was getting too precious and it was so refreshing and so up my alley.”

Although Therese had been working on Oh My Goodness before Tyler came along, Therese explains, “everything just got 3D with Tyler.” Musically, the duo connected over new jack swing and 90s hip-hop. “Tyler and I always used to reminisce about going to the store and trying out all the synths,” Therese recollects.

The group’s debut EP Oh My Goodness is about “living your life, getting mad at things, and burning popcorn. Getting your heart broken and being scared to walk through the woods.” That last feeling was very present as they were recording the beginnings of this EP in a barn in Maine. The two felt homesick and decided to go back to their roots to record. The woods around the barn filled with animals and as Therese described, “it was like being at home, but with eyeballs in the dark.”

Today the duo releases their first remix EP. “We’re really excited because we have the privilege of knowing a lot of amazing musicians.” Therese explains about the remixes, “They’re so different and every song is represented – it’s crazy.” Tyler also chimes in with his excitement, “It’s like having someone draw a caricature of you.”

Oh My Goodness’ songs are be remixed by this talented group:

  • Eliot Krimsky (of Glass Ghost and Here We Go Magic)
  • London-based electronic composer Anna Meredith
  • officerfishdumplings
  • Max Drummey (of Chester French, now touring with Lauryn Hill)
  • Alias (Brendon Whitney) of the Anticon collective
  • Scrambler (Mike Gamble)
  • Christopher Tignor (of Slow Six)

Oh My Goodness is hoping to hit the road this winter and “be like octopi” on stage, performing all of the music from their EP with just the two of them. If you listen to the EP, you will understand the challenge. “All of our limbs and our mouths are working at all times,” Tyler half-jokes about their live show. They also hope to start releasing more singles as soon as possible to keep your ears out!
